The Mothers' Milk Bank of Alabama started about a year ago but now it's fully functioning and can homogenize and pasteurize donated milk on-site.
“This is the first nutrition that babies get, (it’s) so important to have,” said Mary Michael Kelley, with Community Food Bank.
Here nursing mothers with an abundance of milk donate to those in need.
“We even have a mother who lost her child but feels this is a way to give meaningfully,” Kelley said.
In a just a few days their facilities will be certified to process all the donated milk. For the past year, it’s been shipped to Texas for purification. Now it will go straight to area hospitals.
